SOAR Pilot: Substance Use and Co-occurring Disorders

The National Human Trafficking Training and Technical Assistance Center (NHTTAC) is excited to deliver a virtual pilot of its new SOAR training designed to equip providers with the information and resources they need to better serve individuals with substance use and/or co-occurring disorders who have experienced trafficking.

Individuals with substance use and/or co-occurring disorders continue to face stigma, experience shame, and fear legal involvement, which are barriers to seeking assistance. This is especially true for victims of trafficking who may have been coerced into trafficking to avoid withdrawal or forced by a trafficker to use substances during their trafficking experience. This 1.5-hour pilot creates a better understanding of how to serve survivors with substance use and/or co-occurring disorders through a public health lens.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the relationship between substance use, trauma, and mental health
  • Identify how traffickers use substances to exploit individuals for trafficking
  • Determine specific interventions to support each stage of change
  • Identify different treatment options for substance use disorders
  • Share the importance of trafficking awareness and responsiveness with others in your work environment
